CAFCC: Barker faults officiating of Singida Black Stars game

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has faulted how referees handled his South African team’s CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) group-stage match against Singida Black Stars on Sunday.

Forward Langelihle Phiri had given the South Africa’s Betway Premiership side the lead with a 52nd minute strike at New Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.

When the visitors seemed to be heading for a second consecutive victory, substitute Marouf Tchakei struck for the Tanzania Premier League hosts Singida Black Stars in added time.

Stellenbosch FC had travelled to Tanzania while hoping to build on their 1-0 victory over AS Otohô D’Oyo FC at the start of Group C’s proceedings.

Furthermore, the Western Cape-based outfit had momentum in their way following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Orbit College FC in a midweek Betway Premiership clash in South Africa.

What went wrong for Stellenbosch FC

However, the game plan did not work to perfection in Tanzania, with Barker particularly unhappy with officiating.

“In my opinion, we should have six points, unfortunately a clear penalty was not given to us when we were leading one-nil. It probably makes us leading 2-0. Very disappointed with officiating, but anyway, it is what it is. We had a good structure and we defended well,” the coach told the media.

“We had opportunities in transitions and at half-time that was the message. I knew that one opportunity of getting behind them we would get something, which we did. After that, we had to manage the game. Instead of getting a penalty to go two-nil up, we conceded a penalty. Very disappointed with the outcome of the game. I believe it was an opportunity to get maximum points.”

The Tanzanian side picked its first point after an opening 2-0 loss to CR Belouizdad.

The Stellies, who lead the group with four points, will welcome Singida Black Stars in February in the reverse fixture for the group that also comprises.
