The visitors from Morocco never looked threatening against an inspired opponent, who opened the scoring early in the second half through Ronel Manyanga. Dynamos captain Prince Mumba confirmed the victory with an excellent finish after being setup by a dazzling run from Malawian international Chifundo Mphasi.
Only a victory at home against the Moroccan Botola Pro champions was acceptable for the hosts, who kept their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage alive last weekend with a 1-0 victory over Rivers United in Nigeria. Dynamos created a few opportunities in an uneventful first half while RSB attempted to maintain their defensive organization.
But after halftime, the persistence of the underdogs from Zambia led to a breakthrough. Winning the ball deep in opposition territory on the right wing, Daniel Adoko maneuvered into the penalty area and crossed low for Manyanga’s finish off a defender.
RSB continued to lack any sort of attacking threat even after going down and the home supporters were assured of a victory after the second goal arrived in stoppage time. Substitute Mphasi danced around multiple defenders down the left and and his cross found Mumba, who hit a perfect first time shot to beat Mehdi Maftah in the RSB goal.
A tall task remains for Dynamos despite the victory. Tied on seven points with RSB but behind due to the Moroccan club’s superior head-to-head record (a 3-0 victory in Morocco), they will still need to get a result in Egypt against reigning African club champions Pyramids FC next weekend. They will also need help from eliminated Rivers United, who travel to face RSB in Morocco for their final Group A clash.
