CAF Champions League: Espérance win at home to advance; Simba edge Stade Malien

Tunisian giants Espérance de Tunis only needed to avoid defeat on Saturday to advance to the CAF Champions League quarterfinals and the hosts delivered with a 2-0 victory over Angola’s Petro de Luanda at the Stade Hammadi Agrebi.

19-year-old Malian forward Aboubacar Diakité bounced his header past Petro goalkeeper Nuno Marques less than a minute into the second half for the crucial goal. Halftime substitute Chiheb Jebali needed little time to make an impact with his cross from the right wing.

With top spot already secured, Stade Malien fell 0-1 at last place side Simba SC in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Anicet Oura fired in the only goal of the match from close range inside four minutes at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, securing a consolation victory for the Reds to conclude a disappointing continental campaign.
