The second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League has concluded, with 14 clubs officially booking their places in the group stage, while two decisive second-leg encounters are still to come.
Pyramids FC of Egypt remain in contention after drawing 1–1 away to Insurance SC of Ethiopia, with the return leg set to take place next Thursday in Cairo. Meanwhile, RS Berkane of Morocco will host Al Ahli Tripoli from Libya next Saturday, following a 1–1 draw in the first leg in Benghazi.
Al Ahly (Egypt)
Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa)
Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia)
Simba SC (Tanzania)
Al Hilal (Sudan)
Young Africans (Tanzania)
Petro de Luanda (Angola)
AS FAR Rabat (Morocco)
MC Alger (Algeria)
Rivers United (Nigeria)
JS Kabylie (Algeria)
Stade Malien (Mali)
St. Eloi Lupopo (DR Congo)
Power Dynamos (Zambia)
According to CAF’s current club ranking at the start of the season, the teams will be split into four pots for the group stage draw as follows:
Pot 1: Al Ahly (Egypt), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia), Simba SC (Tanzania)
Pot 2: Al Hilal (Sudan), Young Africans (Tanzania), Petro de Luanda (Angola), AS FAR Rabat (Morocco)
Pot 3: MC Alger (Algeria), Rivers United (Nigeria), JS Kabylie (Algeria), Stade Malien (Mali)
Pot 4: St. Eloi Lupopo (DR Congo), Power Dynamos (Zambia)
If Pyramids FC advance, they will join Pot 2, while their Ethiopian rivals Insurance SC would be placed in Pot 4 if they pull off an upset.
In the RS Berkane vs Al Ahli Tripoli clash, a Moroccan victory would see Berkane join Pot 1, pushing Simba SC down to Pot 2. Conversely, if Al Ahli Tripoli progress, they would take a place in Pot 4.
Should both Pyramids and RS Berkane qualify, JS Kabylie and Stade Malien would drop to Pot 4 as a result of the reshuffle.
