CAF Champions League: JSK and AS FAR fail to gain ground after Group B draw

JS Kabylie (JSK) of Algeria and Morocco’s AS FAR were forced to settle for a point each on Saturday after the two North African clubs played to a 0-0 draw in their CAF Champions League Group B clash at the Stade Hocine-Aït-Ahmed in Tizi Ouzou, Algeria.

For the visitors from Morocco, it was an adequate result considering the Royal Army club had not played a competitive match in two months due to an extended break for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Hosts JS Kabylie will be disappointed as both teams remain behind the pace to qualify for the knockout stages.

The lack of match fitness was visible for the visitors, who endured a strong start from hosts JS Kabylie. However, as the match proceeded, AS FAR settled down and began to create some attacking opportunities. Midfielder Abdelfettah Hadraf burst down in the middle behind the hosts’ defense but his shot was well saved by goalkeeper Gaya Merbah.

Veteran playmaker Ryad Boudebouz came the closest to scoring for JS Kabylie. The former Montpellier star produced a tremendous volley from distance following a free kick but with AS FAR goalkeeper Ayoub El Khayati well beat, the shot hit the post before another opportunity failed to result in a goal moments later.

The hosts continued to struggle to overcome a solid defensive effort from the Moroccan club and the second half extended the stalemate. Boudebouz challenged El Khayati with another excellent strike from distance but the goalkeeper did well to react and save.

Both teams remain level with each other in the bottom half of Group B, on two points each. They will meet again in a week’s time in the Moroccan capital of Rabat, where AS FAR will hope to move back into contention for qualification to the knockout stages. In the other match from the group, leaders Al Ahly defeated Tanzanian club Young Africans on Friday.
