CAF Champions League: Group A favorites Pyramids and RS Berkane confirm quarterfinal places

Reigning African club champions Pyramids FC advanced as Group A winners while RS Berkane of Morocco joined the Cairo giants in the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League after both clubs earned home victories on Saturday to finish up the group stage.

Zambian club Power Dynamos had a faint chance of shaking up the group with two consecutive victories heading into Saturday, but they were unable to achieve the nearly impossible feat of defeating Pyramids in Cairo. The visitors answered immediately after Mostafa Ziko opened the scoring for the African champions in the 17th minute through Fredrick Mulambia.

However, that was as good as it got for the Zambians. Youssef Obama restored the advantage for the hosts in the 33rd minute and Brazilian attacker Ewerthon confirmed victory with his strike from distance in the 59th minute.

Regardless, a miraculous victory for the Zambian champions would not have been enough. RS Berkane secured victory against last place side Rivers United of Nigeria to finish as runners-up.

A late first half surge put the hosts ahead 2-0 by halftime and Paul Bassene’s second goal completed a dominant 3-0 victory for the Orange Boys.

The North African heavyweights, widely expected to progress from the group before the start of the group stage, simply had too much firepower despite the heroic effort of Dynamos.

CAF Champions League quarterfinal field almost complete

The top-2 finishers join the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Hilal Omdurman, Espérance de Tunis and Stade Malien in the final eight.

On Sunday, Group B will be decided to determine the final two quarterfinalists. Al Ahly are already confirmed through while AS FAR of Morocco and Tanzania’s Young Africans attempt to join the Egyptian giants.
