CAF Champions League: Sundowns knock out Mokwena’s MC Alger, Al Hilal win Group C

Mamelodi Sundowns joined Group A winners Al Hilal Omdurman in the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League after both teams secured home victories from their group stage finales on Saturday.

Big money signing Brayan Lรฉon delivered a crucial brace as Sundowns overcame MC Alger and former head coach Rulani Mokwena with a 2-0 victory at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria. The Colombian striker opened the scoring inside six minutes for the South African champions, who needed the win to advance.

Lรฉon was on the spot to fire in after a costly error from visitors MCA. Brazilian teammate Arthur Sales pressed high to win the ball deep in MCA territory and his shot was saved by goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz right to the Colombian, who made no mistake from the rebound.

Just when it appeared that the visitors were beginning to play their way back into the match in the second half, Lรฉon snuck in at the near post to redirect an Aubrey Modiba cross by Guendouz at his near post to remove any doubts.

Masandawana will join Sudanese champions Hilal in the quarterfinals after the group winners defeated Congolese club FC Saint-ร‰loi Lupopo 1-0 in Rwanda. Right back Steven Ebuela provided the only goal in the 26th minute with a low near post strike.
