Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango says the CAF Champions League trophy is still within their reach despite the home one-all draw against Pyramids FC last weekend.
The Ugandan told the Betway Premiership champions’ media that they did not play their normal game in the first leg of the Champions League final after conceding late in Pretoria on May 24 2025.
He, however, insisted that all was not lost as Miguel Cardoso’s wards can right the wrongs in the second leg scheduled for Cairo on June 1 2025.
“Saturday’s game was a little bit difficult because we didn’t play our normal game. Our passing game was not fluent. It was still a good fight from the boys regardless of the result because we conceded a last-minute goal we could have avoided,” he said.
“I still believe we have an opportunity to lift the trophy. It is still halfway and it is still in our hands. We just need to believe and have the necessary support that we always get from management, the supporters and all.”
The hosts got their foot in front after Lucas Ribeiro Costa scored in the 54th minute, but could not hold on to the lead. The visitors’ pressure paid off when Walid Kart scored four minutes into added time, pouncing on a wayward clearance to head the ball past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams at the far post.
The home draws complicated life for the Betway Premiership champions, who now need a win in Cairo to be certain of claiming the Champions League title for only the second time. Pyramids, on the other hand, can lift the trophy with a goalless draw.
