Mozambique’s Clube Ferroviário de Maputo suffered a home 0-1 loss to Association Sportive Otohô (AS Otohô) from Congo Brazzaville in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round tie on Sunday.
The ZAP Mozambique Cup champions had enjoyed some rare decent form in the continental cup going into the first leg contest against the Congolese opponents at Lalgy Arena in Maputo’s suburb of Matola.
The owners of the venue, Black Bulls FC, had stunned Rivers United FC the previous day in a Champions League game, hence the pressure was on the railway men to match and even better that result,
Ferroviário de Maputo’s coach Carlos named a very strong squad with the likes of wingers Elias Macamo and Telinho while the ever-reliable striker Victor Malino was the focal point of attack. However, despite creating some chances, the Mozambicans could not find their way to the target in the opening half of the match.
It was the visitors who made their few chances count as they scored the only goal of the game through substitute Wilden Boukouya in the 62nd minute for the Blue and Yellow to a slender lead going into the second leg in Brazzaville next weekend.
Ferroviário de Maputo are representing Mozambique in the CAF Confederation Cup after winning the country’s domestic cup following a 2-1 beating of UD Songo last December.
Carlos’ side saw off Madagascar’s AS Fanalamanga 3-2 on aggregate to move on to the second preliminary round while Ohoto overcame Primeiro de Agosto of Angola.
