Eleven clubs booked their place in the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup on an eventful Saturday filled with goals and a couple of tense penalty shootouts.
Tanzanian big spenders Singida Black Stars avoided a potential upset in the second leg of their clash with Rwanda’s Rayon Sports, coming from behind to secure a 2-1 second leg win and 3-1 aggregate victory at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam. Gloir Tambwe Ngongo put the visitors ahead but Singida responded before halftime to restore their aggregate advantage before moving out of reach in the second half.
Kaizer Chiefs supporters had to sweat out a tense second leg in Johannesburg but AmaKhosi kept their nerve in a penalty shootout to eliminate pesky Angolan club Kabuscorp. Makabi Lilepo’s goal overturned a one-goal deficit from the first leg before Chiefs converted all five of their penalties to advance.

It was similar story in Francistown, Botswana where hosts Jwaneng Galaxy also overcame a first leg defeat to edge Malawi’s Mighty Wanderers 7-6 on penalties after a 1-0 second leg victory.
The drama only increased as Saturday’s action proceeded. The most notable moment came in Abidjan as Ivorian club AFAD Plateau (formerly AFAD Djekanou) scored an incredible four goals in the second half, including three unanswered goals in the final half hour, to eliminate Senegalese club Generation Foot 6-4 on aggregate after falling behind.
North African sides fared well as expected. Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia bounced back from a first leg defeat to eliminate Sudan’s Al Ahly Wad Madani, but celebrations were subdued after promising attacker Oumar Bah suffered an awful injury that required a long stoppage.
Stade Tunisien did enough with a 0-0 second leg draw at ASC SNIM of Mauritania while Olympique Safi, winners of Morocco’s Throne Cup last season, thrashed Nigerien club ASN Nigelec 5-0 to close out Saturday’s action with a 6-0 aggregate victory.
In a historic result, Somalia’s Dekedda SC advanced past Sudan’s Al Zamala courtesy of a fantastic long range strike to advance in dramatic fashion on the away goals rule as well. Neither team could host their home matches, with Dekedda winning the first “home” leg in Nairobi before finishing the job in Libya where Zamala hosted their home leg.
Elsewhere, Ivorian club FC San Pedro barely held on in a 2-2 draw at home against Cameroon’s Aigle Royal, a result that was just enough to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory. Kenya’s Nairobi United also triumphed in a hard fought duel with NEC FC of Uganda, drawing 1-1 at home and advancing on the away goals rule after previously earning a 2-2 first leg draw in Uganda.
