CAF Confederation Cup: Stellenbosch dominate 15 de Agosto, advance to group stage

Stellenbosch Football Club eased to qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup group stage on Sunday with a routine 4-1 second leg victory over Equatorial Guinea’s 15 de Agosto at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

After a 0-0 first leg draw in Equatorial Guinea, Stellies looked to assert themselves at home and did so to maximum effect. Last season’s Confederation Cup semifinalists dominated from the kickoff and after the hosts drew a penalty kick inside twenty minutes, Thato Khiba converted with a perfect spot kick into the corner.

15 de Agosto were fortunate to not be down by more by halftime with Stellies hitting the post on multiple occasions. However, any threat of a comeback from the underdogs vanished early in the second half when Sanele Barns fired in low after being set up by Bradley Mojela.

Andre de Jong added another goal soon after the hour mark and it seemed that the lead would only increase. However, the visitors did show some quality in the final half hour and produced a remarkable movement down the left wing to pull a goal back before Chumani Butsaka provided a response to restore Stellenbosch’s three-goal lead before the full time whistle.

The group stage draw for both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup will take place on November 3 in Johannesburg.
