CAF Confederation Cup: Kotoko-Kwara goalfest highlights action from Sunday

The majority of the first leg duels are complete from the first round of the CAF Confederation Cup and Sunday’s action was highlighted by a Nigeria v Ghana clash in Accra. Kumasi’s Asante Kotoko and Kwara United played to a thrilling first leg that ended 4-3 in favor of the Kotoko’s Porcupine Warriors.

The result leaves plenty to be determined in the second leg back in Nigeria. Kotoko, intent on making an impact in CAF club competition this season, took the lead on three occasions but were only able to preserve their advantage in the second half after Kwara fought back twice to level in the first half.

Down 2-4, a late goal from Abdulraheem Shola gave Kwara more than a fighting chance to overcome the deficit back home next week.

Nigeria’s other Confederation Cup representative, Abia Warriors, got off to a strong start at home with their first-ever goal in continental competition but conceded a late equalizer to Mali’s Djoliba, who will be favorites for the second leg in the Malian capital of Bamako.

Mighty Wanderers of Malawi and Somalia’s Dekedda enjoyed narrow victories in their respective home legs while a West African duel saw Ivorian club AFAD Djekanou come back to draw 1-1 away from home with Senegal’s Génération Foot. Zanzibar’s KMKM FC and AS Otoho of the Republic of Congo were other notable winners with first leg victories, each by a 2-1 score.

One duel was completed on Sunday with Equatorial Guinea’s 15 de Agosto advancing 4-1 on aggregate following a 4-0 second leg victory on Sunday over Foresters FC of Seychelles after both legs took place in Equatorial Guinea.

The second legs will proceed next weekend with the exception of two ties. DR Congo’s AS Simba and Djabal d’Iconi of Comoros will begin with the first leg next weekend as well as another clash between another Congolese club, AS Maniema Union, and Mauritian club Pamplemousses.
