CAF Confederation Cup: USM Alger win Group A after draw with OCS

USM Alger confirmed top spot in Group A of the CAF Confederation Cup following Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home against Moroccan club OC Safi.

First place was the only thing at stake for the two clubs, who had already qualified for the quarterfinals by the end of the fifth matchday. Saturday evening’s clash at Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers was a low-energy affair.

The hosts looked more dangerous. Ivorian striker Dramane Kamagaté drew a save from OCS goalkeeper Hamza Hamiani close to halftime. In the second half, Ahmed Khaldi nearly put USMA in front but his header deflected off a teammate and went just wide following a corner kick.

The visitors posed some threat on the counter-attack but were forced to concede possession for long stretches of the match. Only a victory would have seen the Sharks overtake USMA for first place and they appeared to be relatively content to finish runner-up.

There is only one more quarterfinal slot to be determined on Sunday in Group B with DR Congo’s AS Maniema Union the favorites to advance at the expense of Azam FC.

Group B winners Wydad are already through as well as Algerian giants CR Belouizdad and AS Otôho of the Republic of Congo. Earlier on Saturday, Egyptian clubs Zamalek and Al Masry booked their tickets to the final eight while South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs exited the competition in heartbreaking fashion.
