South African billionaire and business magnate Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected unopposed to remain president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the next four years. CAF held its elective general assembly earlier on Wednesday in the Egyptian capital of Cairo.
Motsepe was the sole candidate during the election with the 63-year-old facing no opposition from his nomination to his election. Certain North African football leaders were rumored to stand as candidates but nothing materialized.
Motsepe took over from Malagasy administrator Ahmad Ahmad after a turbulent time for Africa's football body. Motsepe is credited for brining financial stability and praised for the success of the organization of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Motsepe, who also happens to own South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns, will lead CAF up until 2029.
