Confederation of African Football (CAF) General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba has warned Kenya that they are in a race against time to be ready to host the 2024 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) in August.
According to Mosengo-Omba, the successful hosting of CHAN by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania could go a long way in demonstrating their readiness to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“If this region doesn’t deliver CHAN, then it will be very difficult to trust it to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations,” he warned during a Tuesday press briefing. “Nobody can be sure about tomorrow, but from what I’ve seen today—the huge progress—I see no reason the tournament can't be played here,” he said.
“However, maintaining this momentum is crucial. Consistency is what matters.”
He did, however, point out some improvements, especially in Kasarani Stadium: "Previously, Kasarani had just a few seats, but now it's fully seated. That said, there are still critical elements that must be completed before we can declare Kenya ready."
"I came here in December and saw bare ground, but now there’s grass.
Some pitches look so good you could play golf on them. That’s real progress — even Nyayo has already hosted two matches," he added.
Ulinzi Sports Complex, which will be used as a training venue, has so far been approved by CAF to meet the required standards.
