Simba SC Information Officer Ahmed Ally says the team’s strong home record will be key to overcoming RS Berkane in Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup final second leg at New Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.
The Msimbazi Street-based side aim to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg in Morocco and make history by becoming the first Tanzanian club to clinch the prestigious continental title.
Simba have enjoyed a good run in the competition, especially at home, where they got positive results against Egypt’s Al Masry and Algeria’s CS Constantine.
“Simba have proven their strength on home soil,” Ally said as quoted by the Guardian. “We have not lost a single international match this season at home.
“Our fans have been instrumental in creating a powerful and intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams, and we urge them to pack the New Amaan Complex on Sunday. This final should be remembered for all the right reasons.”
Ally continued: “It’s been over 30 years since that heartbreaking moment. This generation of players has a golden opportunity to do what no Tanzanian club has ever done. We are carrying the hopes of millions of fans and the pride of our nation. We are fully focused on making this moment count.”
Simba will have to beat RS Berkane by 3-0 to be declared champions, while a 2-0 win will take the game to extra-time and potentially penalties. A 2-1 victory for Simba will see Berkane lift the trophy because of the away goals rule.
