AS Maniema Union got off to a strong start in Group B of the CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) with a 2-0 victory over Tanzania’s Azam FC at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa.

With accomplished Congolese coach Florent Ibenge in charge and several African internationals in the squad, the third place finishers from the Tanzania Mainland Premier League were optimistic of claiming at least a point away from home but were not opportunistic enough.

The two teams largely cancelled each other out in the first half but Maniema Union received a big momentum boost before halftime. Careless play from the hosts in their own end led to a turnover and the hosts pounced with Burkinabe playmaker Clement Pitroipa setting up Christian Balako for a routine finish in the penalty area.

After halftime, the hosts were content to concede possession and lean on their strong defense. Defender and captain Osee Ndombele led his defense to a strong performance that limited opportunities for a high-powered Azam attack led by playmaker Feisal Salum and powerful striker Jephte Kitambala, acquired from Maniema Union ahead of the current season.

And coach Papy Kimoto’s side, after surviving some close opportunities for the hosts, found a late goal to clinch three valuable points when an attack down the right wing resulted in Chadoma Ozome heading in a perfect cross from fellow substitute Sylva Tshitenge in the 85th minute.

Maniema Union will look to continue their strong start in Group B next Sunday when they travel to face Kenyan side Nairobi United in their second fixture. Azam FC will host group favorites Wydad AC of Morocco on Friday.
