Simba SC did not need their home supporters in attendance on Sunday as the Tanzanian giants defeated Algeria's CS Constantine 2-0 behind closed doors to win Group A in the CAF Confederation Cup. Kibu Denis and Leonel Ateba scored for the Reds who moved ahead of CSC in the Group A standings. Both teams had already secured qualification to the quarterfinals before Sunday's match.
Knowing that avoiding defeat would confirm them as the Group A winners, the visitors from Algeria utilized a defensive strategy that was effective in the first half to keep Simba out of the goal. However the hosts increased the pressure as the match wore on and CSC's resistance broke soon after an hour elapsed when Kibu fired in an unstoppable shot from distance.
Eighteen minutes later it was Ateba who finished the job for Simba with an easy finish from close range. CSC could not manage a shot on target until second half stoppage time, forcing them to settle for second place in the group.
In the other match from Tunisia, CS Sfaxien finally earned their first points of the group stage with a 4-0 result against Angola's Bravos do Maquis. Both teams were eliminated from contention to reach the quarterfinals and the victory is a positive end to a nightmare continental campaign for CSS.
