CAFCC: Mighty Wanderers FC vow to upset Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy in playoffs

Malawi Super League side Mighty Wanderers director of football David Kanyenda has exuded confidence that they have what it takes to beat Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy when the two sides clash in the CAF Confederation Cup at Bingu National Stadium September 21, Sunday.

Wanderers will be making a return to continental football after eight years, their last appearance coming in 2018 when they faced AS Vita of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the CAF Champions League, and lost 6-1 on aggregate.

According to Kanyenda, Wanderers have prepared well to excel in the Confederation Cup unlike their last campaign in the Champions League.

“This is not the same tournament we participated [in 2018], last time it was CAF Champions. The quality is not the same. It’s like playing in the Europa League which is different from playing in the UEFA Champions League,” said Kanyenda as quoted by Bola News.

On coming up against Galaxy, he said: We are undefeated in the league back home. We believe we can hold on our own. Galaxy is a good team, but we have put in place a strategy to win.

“You need also to know that Malawi was in Botswana last week and we managed to win against Namibia, our players were there, we can replicate that victory.”

He concluded: “We had wanted to play a team from Mozambique but it pulled out as they had a local game there, but we hope if we go through to the next stage, we will have a friendly match. When we went for a draw in Tanzania, we linked up with different clubs but they were also busy for a friendly.”

The return leg will be played at Obert Itani Chilume Stadium on September 27.
