CAFCC: ZESCO United gave everything in Zamalek SC win – Ndhlovu

ZESCO United head coach Mathews Ndhlovu described their CAF Confederation Cup victory against Zamalek SC as a difficult one but praised his players for their performance in the matchday five fixture on Sunday.

The Timu ya Ziko secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Egyptian giants in a Group D encounter at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. The victory earned Zesco United their first win the group stage campaign.

Both sides started the match on a positive note, with ZESCO United enjoying spells of possession and creating a few early attempts on goal. However, neither team managed to seriously test the goalkeepers, and the first half ended 0-0.

ZESCO broke deadlock in second half

The hosts returned for the second half with renewed energy and intent. ZESCO United thought they had taken the lead when Abraham Siankombo finished off a cross from Amine Hiver in the 57th minute, but the effort was ruled out for offside by the assistant referee.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 61st minute when Emmanuel Manda was fouled inside the penalty area. Amine Hiver stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to give Zesco United what turned out to be the winner.

ZESCO United want to finish on a high note

“The game was tough, especially playing against an experienced side like Zamalek. We were coming from a challenging period without a win, but our plan worked,” Ndhlovu told reporters after the game.

“The players gave everything and deserved the victory. Even though we are out of the competition, we want to finish on a high note.”

ZESCO United will now turn their focus to their final group match away to Al Masry in Egypt, where they will aim to end their campaign on a positive note.
