The match ended in a 2-1 victory for Al Hilal at their adopted home, the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda. The Sudanese giants will begin play in the Rwandan Premier League on Wednesday, where they will compete for the 2025-26 season.
But their opening match in Group C from the Champions League ended with plenty of animosity between the two foes. Police were forced to intervene before the two teams went to their changing rooms.
In a hard fought match, substitute and Hilal captain Mohamed Abdelrahman scored the match winner in the 75th minute shortly after coming on. Close to full time, the hosts were reduced to ten players after midfielder Salah Adel was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. However, the Algerian visitors led by coach Rulani Mokwena created little danger and were unable to level the match.
The Sudanese champions will next face Police FC in Rwanda’s top flight before traveling to neighboring DR Congo where they will face FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo on Sunday for their second match from Group C in the Champions League. MC Alger will host South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday.
