CAFCL: Dynamos coach hails players after ‘deserved’ RS Berkane win

Power Dynamos head coach Osward Mutapa hailed his team for the positive result against RS Berkand and rallied his boys to continue grinding results in the CAF Champions League campaign.

The Zambian Super League champions displayed a stellar performance in the fifth round of the lucrative competition’s group stage, securing a hard-fought but commanding 2-0 victory over Moroccan side at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday.

Second-half goals from Ronel Manyanga in the 48th minute, and Prince Mumba, three minutes into additional time, sealed a crucial three points for Dynamos, keeping their race for a quarter-final place firmly alive behind group leaders Pyramids FC.

‘It was a result that we wanted’

After a 0-0 first half in which Dynamos created several promising chances but failed to convert, the breakthrough came just three minutes after the restart. Daniel Adoko’s intelligent play on the wing unlocked the Berkane defence, setting up Manyanga for a simple tap-in the 48th minute, past the Berkane goalkeeper Mehdi Maftah.

Mutapa made tactical substitutions in the second half, introducing Chifundo Mphasi and Linos Makwaza Jnr for Ronnel Manyanga and Daniel Adoko. Later, Aaron Katebe and Eddie Ishmael Ankobo were also introduced for Moses Shumah and Fredrick Mulambia, respectively.

Mphasi’s introduction injected fresh belief into Power’s attack. The substitute drew three yellow-card fouls from the visitors and proved instrumental in the decisive second goal, delivering a well-timed assist for Mumba, who calmly finished to double the lead and put the result beyond doubt.

Dynamos to finish campaign against Pyramids

Speaking after the game, Mutapa said: “It was a game we wanted to win, we wanted the points, and my players executed the game according to my plans, I want to congratulate them for what they did.

“We knew Berkane will not be an easy fixture, and it is the reason we had to be very cautious at the back while moving forward to search for goals. We managed to do it perfectly and get the win that we needed most. Overall, we deserved to win the game.”

Mutapa added: “We wan to keep winning, and our focus shifts to the last group game stage game. We want to quality, and we will go to the away game against Pyramids with the focus of getting maximum points.”

Dynamos moved to seven points from five matches, level with their Moroccan opponents in the group standings. The result follows an impressive 1-0 away triumph over Rivers United in Nigeria.

Attention now shifts to a crucial away fixture in Egypt against group leaders Pyramids FC as Dynamos continue their continental campaign.
