CAFCL: Finidi George targets Rivers United maiden win after draw in Zambia

Rivers United head coach Finidi George claims his side will be targeting their maiden victory next week in the CAF Champions League (CAFCL) after holding hosts Power Dynamos to a 0-0 draw in Ndola, Zambia.

The match, played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday, saw the “Pride of Rivers” secure their first point in the group stage this season.

Reacting to the goalless draw, Finidi stated that although they aimed for a victory, they are satisfied to walk away with a point.

“We tried to contain them a bit, I think in the second half, and they pushed us back. We only defended in the second half. I think the second half it was more of Dynamos taking control of the game, you know? So, not the result that we wanted, but we’re happy for the draw.”

The former Nigeria national team coach added that the result would have been more significant had they won their previous match. He is now looking forward to the return fixture against Power Dynamos at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

“This draw would have been a good result for us if we had won against Berkane, you know? We knew how we lost that game in the last one minute in the extra time. We conceded two goals, you know.

So, if we had won that game, this draw would have been the perfect result for us because we know we are going back home to face the same team and we know we are stronger at home.

So, not quite happy with how everything has turned out, but it’s football. We just have to continue and then see how we can get our first win at home next week.”

Rivers United remain in third position with one point from three games, following previous group stage defeats to holders Pyramids FC of Egypt and Morocco’s RS Berkane.
