Espérance de Tunis coach Maher Kanzari took responsibility after EST exited the CAF Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday following a 1-0 aggregate defeat to South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Tunisian outfit had a solid performance in Rades but were unable to turn things around at home, falling short on the continental stage yet again. Kanzari stated that their exit from the competition is painful and took full responsibility.
“It is a bitter exit from the Champions League but we faced a strong opponent. I don't want to blame the players, as it's a collective responsibility,” said Kanzari.
The former Tunisia national team coach further added that the focus now shifts to domestic competitions. “We must now focus on the rest of the domestic competitions, namely the cup and the league, and improve the players' performance as some of their level does not match the technical requirements of Champions League matches. I will keep other observations to myself, given my duty of confidentiality as a coach.”
Espérance had a few missed opportunities and settled for a barren draw. Sundowns were very organized defensively, as the Tunisian outfit’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals ended in disappointment.
