CAFCL: Ndayiragije warns against complacency as Kenya Police FC eye next round

Despite carrying a 3-1 advantage heading into their return leg of the CAF Champions League, Kenya Police FC head coach Etienne Ndayiragije has cautioned his players against underrating Somalian champions Mogadishu City when they face off on Sunday.

The law enforcers, who are making their first appearance in the Champions League, are seeking to get past the group stages of the lucrative competition. Having won their first leg, first preliminary round fixture with a resounding outcome, the Burundian tactician believes the two-legged tie is far from far.

‘Mogadishu City can hurt you’

“We managed to beat them in the first leg, but it doesn’t mean we go relaxed for the return leg,” Ndayiragije told Pan-Africa Football. “If you make such a mistake then, we will be punished.”

He added: “The opposing side had a good team that can surprise you with counter attacks, that’s why we have taken precautions, they are opponents you have to be really cautious with and concentrate a lot on.

“If you don’t play with a proper game plan, they can surprise you, they can hurt you. I watched them during the CECAFA tournament, their opening game, they are a very good side despite our win against them, and so I have asked my players not to drop the guard but be ready to put up another great fight on Sunday.”

Mogadishu City not giving up yet despite defeat

Meanwhile, Mogadishu City coach Abdirahman Ali Abubakar said ahead of the return leg: “We know Police have quality players, but I want to promise we are coming to fight for every ball again, and take the game to their side, we will not defend.

“Our aim is to qualify (to the next stage), because if we do, it will be a huge opportunity to showcase Somali talent and give our players exposure to scouts and bigger competitions.”

Police are representing Kenya by virtue of winning the FKF Premier League last season.
