CAFCL: Orlando Pirates advance with lopsided aggregate victory

Orlando Pirates are through to the final round of qualifying for the CAF Champions League (CAFCL) after Saturday’s 4-0 second leg victory over Lesotho’s Lioli FC at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.

With the tie already well decided following Pirates’ 3-0 first leg victory, the second leg was a mere formality for the South African giants against the minnows from Lesotho. Supporters who showed up for the match were gifted with a splendid curling free kick from Tshepang Moremi to open the scoring close to halftime.

Soon after the break, Moremi completed his brace courtesy of poor goalkeeping when Lioli shot stopper William Huni allowed a low long range effort to sneak past him.

The aggregate score became even more lopsided in the final fifteen minutes. Rarely-used forward Yanela Mbuthuma was given an opportunity off the bench and scored twice in the final fifteen minutes to finish off a 7-0 aggregate victory.

Pirates will have to wait for an extra week before finding out who their opponents are in the final round of qualifying for the group stage proper. DR Congo’s Saint-Γ‰loi Lupopo and Al Merrikh of Sudan commenced their first round clash with the first leg on Saturday with the winner advancing to face the Bucs after the second leg on October 4.
