A perfect penalty shootout from Power Dynamos eliminated Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas from the CAF Champions League (CAFCL) on Sunday, presenting a big opportunity for the Zambian champions.
Souleymane Fofana scored early in the second half to give ASEC a 1-0 home victory in the second leg played at the Stade Félix-Houphouët-Boigny, leveling the aggregate score at 1-1.
However, a penalty shootout was needed to separate the teams and after a tense opening four rounds that saw both teams remain perfect from the spot, ASEC were the first to crack under the pressure. Romaric Amoussou’s spot kick was saved by Dynamos goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga and the Zambian side celebrated a massive 5-4 shootout victory.
ASEC struggled in the first half to overcome the first leg defeat in Zambia. An improved effort saw Les Mimos score but Seydou Sacko was issued a red card ten minutes later to halt the momentum. Power Dynamos received a red card of their own late on but held out well to set the stage for their shootout victory.
A massive opportunity now awaits for Dynamos to be the first Zambian club to reach the Champions League group stage since ZESCO United during the 2019-20 edition. Ugandan champions Vipers SC stand between Dynamos and qualification to the group stage with both clubs fancying their chances.
