Hosts RS Berkane failed to take their chances on Saturday as the reigning CAF Confederation Cup champions were held to a 0-0 draw in the CAF Champions League (CAFCL) by holders Pyramids FC.
Luck was not on the side of RSB star forward Oussama Lamlioui, who had a few opportunities to spark his team to victory. The result gives Pyramids the edge in securing top spot in Group A but both teams are in strong position to qualify for the quarterfinals of the competition, level at the top of the table with seven points each.
But the Orange Boys of Berkane will be disappointed. It took sixty seconds for the hosts to create the best opportunity of the match when midfielder Mamadou Lamine Camara’s precise long pass unlocked the opposition defense. Lamlioui got on the end of the pass and lifted the ball over advancing goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy only to leave the home support shocked as he failed to finish into an empty goal.
Just after the half hour mark, Lamlioui showed his quality with a quick turn and blast from distance but El Shenawy did well to produce a diving save.
After the halftime break, the visitors did show some initiative by creating a couple of good opportunities to threaten the RSB defense. After the hour mark, the match swung back in favor of the hosts as they seized control again. But the Orange Boys endured one more moment of frustration when substitute Zinedine Machach’s strike from distance beat El Shenawy but went off the post.
