RS Berkane completed a remarkable comeback on Friday against Rivers United in Nigeria, scoring twice in stoppage time for a 2-1 victory in their CAF Champions League (CAFCL) clash.
The Moroccan club secured a hard-fought victory over the CAF Champions League debutants at the Godswill Akpabio National Stadium in Uyo on Friday, continuing their perfect start in Group A.
Rivers United took the lead late in the first half when Friday Ubong’s strike took a deflection off RSB midfielder Mamadou Camara and into his own goal.
However, the second half saw a rejuvenated RSB side, who were determined to get back into the match. The visitors’ efforts finally paid off deep into second half stoppage time when a free kick service from El Tayeb Boukhriss fell kindly for fellow substitute Youness El Kaabi, who leveled the score.
A sensational turnaround was complete seconds later. From the kickoff, the hosts passed the ball back to goalkeeper Osage Onisodumeya, who took too long on his clearance attempt. El Kaabi sprinted in to block the keeper’s kick, sparking a chaotic scene where the forward chased the ball down and lifted his shot over a desperately flailing Onisodumeya. The ball went off the post and slowly bounced in front of the empty net for Mounir Chouiar to tap in the match winner and spark scenes of joy on the visitors’ bench.
The victory means RSB have a maximum six points from two games, remaining top of Group A, while the Nigeria Premier Football League’s sole representative, Rivers United, is bottom of the log with two defeats.
