CAFCL: What Romain Folz told Young Africans players after sack

Coach Romain Folz has revealed what he told Young Africans Sports Club (Yanga SC)’s players hours before he was sacked in Malawi on Saturday.

The Tanzania Mainland Premier League giants terminated the Frenchman’s contract after their 1-0 loss to Silver Strikers at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Attacker Andrew Joseph’s late strike saw the Malawi champions Strikers stunning their Tanzanian counterparts in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round match.

Speaking in a post-match interview, the former Mamelodi Sundowns trainer revealed what he told the players in the dressing room.

“You are never happy when you lose, so we are disappointed, me at first. The reality is that we had more than enough chances to score, but ultimately we didn’t convert and that is the problem, but more than that I don’t think it helps to bring negativity into the talks,” Folz told the media.

“I can tell you what I told the players: I am not happy with the technical level we showed today. We know and they know that we were not at the technical level that we ought to be…”

What Yanga SC’s statement said about Romain Folz

A statement from the Tanzanian side says newly-appointed assistant coach Patrick Mabedi will hold fort while the hunt for a new coach begins in earnest.

“Yanga SC management would like to inform the public that it has terminated the contract of first team coach, Romain Folz,” the statement reads. “Yanga management would like to thank coach Romain Folz for his contribution to our club and wish him all the best in his next role.”

“During this period, our team will be under assistant coach Patrick Mabedi while the process of finding a head coach continues.”

The 35-year-old Frenchman was also fired at the Betway Premiership in January months after returning to South Africa where he had unsuccessful stints with Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu FC.

Yanga will host Strikers in the second leg on Saturday in Dar es Salaam.
