Malawi’s Silver Strikers assistant coach Etson Kadenge Mwafulira has shared the secret behind their brave 1-1 away draw against Malagasy giants Elgeco Plus on Sunday.
The TNM Super League holders came from behind to hold Plus FC in the 2025-2026 CAF Champions League preliminary round, first leg game at Cote d’Or National Complex in Mauritius.
In a post-match interview with the club’s media, Mwafulirwa shared what the technical panel told the players while they trailed to the Malagasy champions.
“A good game away in Mauritius,” he said. “We conceded early in the match after miscalculating a move by the hosts, but we told the boys to be at ease and build attacks that would end up getting us a goal, and we did that then returned into the match.”
The Malawian coach now feels that the Lilongwe-based giants stand a chance of progressing to the next round after the away result.
“We will be returning home for the second leg, and we feel that with the home support and a well-worked plan, we will manage to get a good result,” he added.
Plus FC scored first through Randriamanampisoa Tonny on the stroke of half time before the visitors responded in the 54th minute through substitute Andrew Joseph’s goal.
Strikers will welcome Plus FC in the return leg on Saturday at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
The overall winner of the two legs will eventually meet Tanzanian giants Young Africans in the next stage.
