Mamelodi Sundowns legend Kennedy Mweene has urged the South African giants to properly approach how to play Pyramids FC in Saturday’s first leg of the CAF Champions League final. The Zambian warned that any opposition from North Africa is dangerous.
The Sundowns assistant coach analysed the strength of the Egyptians during the latest installment of The Pitchside Podcast involving former teammates Hlompho Kekana and Sibusiso Vilakazi. The trio was part of the squad that won the 2016 Champions League trophy under the tutelage of coach Pitso Mosimane.
Mweene, the 2012 AFCON winner, noted that Pyramids have progressed and grown in stature due to a strong squad built over the years.
“The last time we played them in 2023, they were a different team than this season because of the players. [However], they haven’t changed a lot of players, and that is why you can see there is progression in terms of how they play,” he said.
The Zambian then called for caution from Miguel Cardoso’s side at Versfeld Loftus Stadium. Mweene said: “They [Pyramids FC] have played together for a long time. It is a very dangerous team; anything from North Africa, you must know how to play them. They are dangerous.”
Taking his turn, former Masandawana skipper Kekana explained why Pyramids’ strike force, led by Fiston Mayele, is difficult to stop.
“I love their brotherhood upfront. You can see they are playing for one another,” he noted.
The Pretoria-based giants had an upper hand when they last met the Egyptians, beating them 1-0 in Cairo on December 19, 2023. Teboho Mokoena scored the lone goal. Four days later, the Group A reverse fixture of the Champions League group stage match ended goalless in South Africa.
