Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed Remo Stars 5-1 in Abuja to set one foot into the 2025/26 CAF Champions League (CAFCL) group stage. The game in Abuja saw four second-half goals at both ends as the South African champions took home a commanding first-leg victory.
Tashreeq Matthews opened the scoring with a brilliant left-footed strike from outside the box in the 12th minute. Veteran striker Peter Shalulile made it two just before halftime after a long ball from Ronwen Williams found him in the opposition half. The Nigerian outfit struggled to create scoring chances, as they were limited to one attempt on goal through Victor Mbaoma.
The second half saw the visitors continue to be efficient in front of goal. Portuguese midfielder Miguel Reisinho scored with a simple tap-in after good work by right-back Khuliso Mudau. Brazilian attacker Arthur Sales struck to extend the lead to four before second-half substitute Samson Olasupo pulled one back for Remo with a good finish from the edge of the box. Second-half substitutes Lebo Mothiba and Tsiki Ntsabeleng combined as the latter made it five with a cool finish.
It will be an uphill task for Remo Stars to recover from the heavy defeat and turn the tables around next week. The Betway Premiership champions are now surely on their way to the group stages of the Champions League.
