The runners-up from last year’s edition of the CAFWCL, Morocco’s AS FAR Rabat, confirmed top spot in rA with a routine 2-0 victory over 15 de Agosto of Equatorial Guinea. Najat Badri converted a penalty kick just before halftime and Safa Banouk doubled AS FAR’s advantage with a splendid curling effort in the second half.
In the other match from Group A, host club FC Masar narrowly avoided a shock elimination against Mali’s USFAS Bamako. The Malian club took a surprise lead inside ten minutes but a red card late in the first half left Masar on the attack throughout the second half. Substitute Farah El Mahdy sent Masar through with a crucial equalizer in stoppage time.
In Group B, ASEC Mimosas advanced as the group winners while reigning champions TP Mazembe advanced as runners-up.
Ivorian giants ASEC, who defeated Mazembe on the opening matchday from the group, finished the job to claim top spot with a dominant 4-0 victory over Botswana’s Gaborone United. Ami Diallo and Habibou Ouedraogo each scored two goals for ASEC, with Ouedraogo continuing to establish herself as one of the stars of the competition so far.
TP Mazembe fell behind early but stormed back for a 4-1 victory over JKT Queens of Tanzania. Marlene Yav Kasaj converted from the penalty spot twice, leaving her three for three on penalty kicks in the CAFWCL group stage.
Now a rematch of last year’s final will take place in the CAFWCL semifinals with AS FAR set to face TP Mazembe. Host club Masar will clash with ASEC Mimosas.
