The semifinals of the CAF Women’s Champions League (CAFWCL) qualifiers in the WAFU-B zone have delivered their verdict at Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro. ASEC Mimosas and Bayelsa Queens will battle for the trophy after eliminating Ghana’s Police Ladies and Burkina Faso’s USFA, respectively.
In the opening game, ASEC Mimosas claimed a convincing 4-1 win over Police Ladies. Ami Diallo (44’) broke the deadlock for the Ivorians before Essi Dagba (47’), Habibou Ouédraogo (54’) and N’Guessan Nadège (68’) added to the tally. Despite pulling one back, the Ghanaians never managed to turn the tide.
In the second semi-final, Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens edged out USFA 2-1. More clinical in decisive moments, they confirmed their status as tournament favourites and secured their spot in the final. The decisive clash will see ASEC Mimosas, backed by home support, face 2022 WAFU-B champions Bayelsa Queens on Friday, September 5.
Post-match reactions
ASEC Mimosas head coach Siaka Traoré:
“Since the group stage, there has been no easy match. All opponents are national champions and every game has its own reality. Today, we knew we were up against a very physical side. Our plan was to tire them out by using the width of the pitch while staying tactically disciplined. Above all, it was a psychological battle, and the girls responded with great focus and determination.”
Bayelsa Queens head coach, Busari Hakeem Ishola:
“It was a very psychological game. We had studied our opponents, who play directly and with a lot of energy. The key for us was to remain focused and manage the mental side of the contest. We asked the players not to be unsettled by USFA’s intensity and physicality. The final against ASEC will be tough, especially with their home crowd behind them, but we know what to expect and will prepare thoroughly for the challenge.”
