ASEC Mimosas have won the 5th edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League (CAFWCL) qualifying tournament for West Africa’s WAFU-B zone. The Ivorian side claimed victory on Friday, September 5, in Yamoussoukro against Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens after a tightly contested final.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw in regulation time and went into extra time before being decided in a penalty shootout. ASEC prevailed 8-7 after a tense series of spot-kicks.
Earlier in the day, the third-place playoff between Ghana’s Police Ladies and Burkina Faso’s USFA was also decided on penalties. USFA came out on top, winning 5-4 to secure the bronze medal.
With this triumph, ASEC Mimosas become the first Ivorian club to lift this title and will represent the WAFU-B zone in the upcoming final phase of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
