CAFWCL COSAFA Qualifiers: Sundowns were poor- Sapula

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies coach Godfrey Sapula says ZESCO Ndola Girls deserved to beat them 2-1 in the semifinal of the CAF Women’s Champions League: COSAFA Qualifiers on Friday.

Speaking in a post-match interview with COSAFA media, the former Sundowns midfielder said his side did not do enough to win the game at AW Muller Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“We were really poor today—if we are honest,” Sapula said. “We were really a shade of ourselves. There was no fluidity in our play. We could not control the ball. We kicked long balls, but we understand sometimes you are not able to play how you want. It is football. We accept that.

“The better team won today. They wanted it more. They fought for everything. They dominated the second balls. They made all the 50-50 situations into 60-40 and to their advantage. They brought more fights. I think we didn’t deserve to win here today. It is a huge setback. We are really disappointed.”

The debutants ZESCO came from behind to stun the fancied Sundowns Ladies 2-1, ending the hosts’ dream for CAF Women’s Champions League qualification.

ZESCO booked a date with Gaborone United Ladies in the final scheduled for Sunday at the same venue.

The champions from Botswana qualified for the final after defeating Mozambique’s Costa do Sol 3-1 also on Friday.
