Lucia Mocambique scored a late equalizer as Mozambican champions Costa do Sol forced a 2-2 draw against Comoros’ Olympic de Moroni in South Africa on Monday in CAF Women’s Champions League (CAFWCL) qualifying from the COSAFA region.
The result at the UJ AW Muller Stadium in Johannesburg left Group C open.
Costa do Sol defender Marlene Janeiro’s own goal put the islanders on the front foot with a goal in the 12th minute following confusion caused by a long pall into the box.
Anllaouia Ali made it 2-0 six minutes later after capitalizing on a goalkeeping error before the Mozambicans halved the deficit in the 32nd minute through Joana Mussuie’s goal.
Just when the islanders seemed to be sailing out of sight with the maximum points, Mocambique levelled matters for Costa do Sol from a well-taken free kick from the left to make it two-all.
The result left Costa do Sol on four points from two games whereas Olympic de Moroni have one point in the group.
Costa do Sol started the competition with a surprise 2-0 triumph over Herentals Queens on Saturday while Olympic de Moroni were making their debut in the three-member group.
In another match played at the same venue, Eswatini’s Young Buffaloes came from behind to beat Lesotho’s Kick 4 Life 3-1 and put their Group B campaign on track.
Nteboheleng Mohoshela had given the Lesotho champions a surprise lead barely 10 minutes into the match, and it took 28 minutes before Nonjabuliso Mokgala responded for Buffaloes.
The two teams were locked at 1-1 at the break. An own goal from Mutheliso Mosala in the 66th minute and Nomvuyo Dvuba’s 75th minute strike completed the comeback.
Buffaloes have now joined Gaborone Ladies, opponents who beat them 1-0 on Saturday, at the top of the pile on three points each. The Botswana champions meet Kick 4 Life on Wednesday needing just a draw.
Group winners only are guaranteed a semi-final place alongside the best runner-up across the pools and also advances to the last four.
