CAFWCL COSAFA Semifinals: Sundowns v ZESCO, Gaborone v Costa do Sol

The semifinal line up for the CAF Women’s Champions League: COSAFA Qualifiers emerged after final group qualifying matches played on Wednesday in South Africa.

Mamelodi Sundowns will square off against ZESCO Ndola Ladies from Zambia on Friday while Gaborone United Ladies date Mozambique’s Costa do Sol. Both matches will be played at AW Muller Stadium in Johannesburg.

Two-time winners Sundowns had secured their last-four spot after strolling past Namibia’s Beauties FC 7-0 on Tuesday to finish their Group A assignments unbeaten, without conceding and scoring 11 goals.

Likewise, ZESCO, too, kept their semifinal hopes alive as the overall best runners up after overcoming Ntopwa Ladies 5-3 also on Tuesday to take their tally to six points in Group A. It is a remarkable feat for the debutants from Zambia.

Therefore, the two teams awaited the outcome of the last group B and C matches played on Wednesday.

And the wait was worth it as the last-year finalists Gaborone produced the highest scoreline in the history of the regional qualifiers, clobbering Lesotho’s Kick 4 Life 10-1 to top Group B table.

Maungo Maponga scored four goals and Gaonuadiwe Ontlametse made it one better with five to instantly emerge as the Golden Boot award favourite. Desiree Kenyaditswe scored the other goals. Lerato Tsoinyane netted Kick 4 Life’s face-saver.

In other matches played on Wednesday, Zimbabwe’s Herentals Queens beat Comoros’ Olympique de Moroni 4-2 but it was not enough to earn both teams a semifinal spot.

Costa do Sol had done themselves a big favour days earlier, and were simply awaiting confirmation of their progression.
