Group B from the CAF Women’s Champions League (CAFWCL) qualifiers in the WAFU-B Zone delivered its verdict this Saturday. Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens and Ghana’s Police Ladies finished in the top two spots and advanced to the semifinals.
In the closing round of the group stage, Bayelsa Queens defeated Benin’s Sam Nelly (4-1). Meanwhile, Ghana’s Police Ladies overcame Togo’s ASKO (3-1). These results allow both of Saturday’s winners to continue their campaign while Sam Nelly and ASKO exit the competition. Sam Nelly managed to record one win but Togolese representatives ASKO leave the tournament with a disappointing record: three matches, three defeats, six goals conceded and only two scored.
Sam Nelly, on the other hand, finish with three points while conceding seven goals and scoring three.
After the win against ASKO, Police Ladies coach Yusif Bazighi and midfielder Assata Hamidou, voted player of the match, spoke at the post-match press conference.
The Ghanaian coach admitted that the match was not as easy as the scoreline suggested: “It was a difficult game because our opponents had nothing to lose. For us, however, the obligation was to win and secure qualification for the semi-finals. The most important thing was to take all three points.”
The two teams join Group A winners ASEC Mimosas and runners-up Burkina Faso’s USFA in the semifinals. ASEC will clash with Police Ladies while Bayelsa Queens face USFA on Tuesday.
Final Standings Group B
