Cameroon legend Rigobert Song has not signed a contract to be the next head coach of the Central African Republic national side. CAR’s Ministry of Sports appointed the former Cameroon national team trainer but the move was rejected by the CAR Football Federation (FCF).
FCF in a press release stated appointing national side coaches is solely given to the executive committee. According to close source FCF President Celestin Yanindji rather wanted to appoint a local coach for the national side.
Song returned to Yaounde last week and in an interview with Deutsche Welle said he hopes things will get resolved with the federation. “At some point, I think that there will be a good collaboration. That will allow everything to go well.”
Song reportedly did not want to take the center stage in the rift between the government and the federation. He was unveiled as the new coach last week but he is yet to sign the deal.
He acknowledged that the president of CAR wanted him to train the national side and the federation will collaborate on finding a mutual solution for parties involved. In 2017, former Cameroon national side player Francois Omam-Biyik’s contract with the CAR national side was annulled after the federation refused to accept his appointment.
In some African countries, it is common for sport ministries to appoint national side coaches as they mostly cover the salaries to the coaches.
