Cape Town City FC announces mass exodus after relegation

Cape Town City FC have confirmed a significant overhaul of its squad, releasing nine players following their relegation from the Betway Premiership.

This mass exodus includes several key figures, notably long-serving defender Thamsanqa Mkhize.

Mkhize, a stalwart for the club, spent nine seasons with the Citizens and was integral to securing two trophies during his tenure. The club officially announced the departures on Saturday, as preparations for the new season in the second-tier league get underway.

This major restructuring comes after the Cape Town-based side failed to retain their top-flight status during the recent PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs. The club finished 15th in the DStv Premiership last season, leading to their participation in the mini-league.

Despite their efforts, CT City could only manage third place in the playoffs with three points from four matches. North West side Orbit College FC ultimately secured promotion to the Betway Premiership, topping the table with eight points.

As a direct consequence, John Comitis’ club will now compete in the Motsepe Foundation Championship during the upcoming 2025/26 season.

The club conveyed its gratitude to the departing players for their contributions during their time at the Citizens.

“Cape Town City can confirm the departure of the following players who’ve worn the badge with pride and represented the club with heart,” the club stated.

“Each player leaves with our deepest thanks for the dedication and professionalism they showed during their years at the club. We wish them nothing but success in the next chapter of their journey. Once a Citizen, always a Citizen.”

The nine released players have all been granted their clearances and are now free to seek opportunities with any team of their choice.
