Cardoso defends draw against Mokwena’s MC Alger

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has offered a surprisingly positive assessment of his side’s goalless draw against Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger, describing the performance as “dominant” despite lacking firepower in the final third.

The Brazilians played to a tightly contested 0-0 draw away from home in their second match of the CAF Champions League group stage on Saturday, maintaining their lead at the top of Group C.

Following a decisive 3-1 victory over FC Saint-Eloi Lupopo last weekend, Sundowns struggled to replicate their attacking form in Algiers, notably finishing the match without a shot on target. While MC Alger also failed to convert their chances, Cardoso focused on the tactical execution and control exhibited by his team.

Praise for Tactical Control: Cardoso on Sundowns

Despite the lack of goals, the Portuguese coach insisted the team’s display warranted commendation.

“I think that it was a beautiful match, played by two good teams. I think Sundowns have to be proud of the match that we did,” Cardoso stated.

He highlighted Sundowns’ ability to dictate the flow of the game, even against Mokwena’s well-drilled side.

“We had the intention to control the match, and I think we had absolute control of the match. Anyway, good strategy from MC Alger closing the middle with a diamond, the space that we are quite strong on using,” he noted, praising the tactical duel.

Cardoso described the midfield battle as crucial: “We knew that space would be a big fight because both teams have the quality to play inside, and it was also important that we had numbers inside.”

Cardoso extended his praise beyond the pitch to the atmosphere and the players’ mental fortitude.

“For people who like the tactical match, it was a beautiful match. We respect what happened on the pitch in a fantastic ambience. Sometimes it’s difficult to play and manage emotions,” he said. “I think both teams showed maturity in managing the different moments.”

Ultimately, while the point kept them on track, the coach admitted the desire for more.

“Fantastic organisation, good pressure on the opponents and not allowing many entries in the box, and we would have loved to take three points, but we’ll take one and prepare for the future.”
