CAFCL: Cardoso reveals the danger posed by Stade Malien

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has identified physicality as the primary weapon in Stade Malien’s arsenal ahead of their high-stakes CAF Champions League quarter-final clash tonight.

Masandawana welcome the Malian giants to Loftus Versfeld for the first-leg encounter, with the Portuguese tactician wary of a side that bullied their way to the top of Group D. While Sundowns secured their knockout berth as Group C runners-up, their opponents arrive in Pretoria with a reputation for overwhelming teams with sheer athletic power.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Cardoso noted that Stade Malien’s aggressive approach proved too much for several teams during the group stages. However, he also suggested that this heavy-handed style could be their undoing if Sundowns play with intelligence.

CARDOSO PLOTS TO NEUTRALISE STADE MALIEN’S PHYSICAL THREAT

“It’s a team that has a lot of physicality; in some moments, some teams suffered a lot with that in the group stages,” Cardoso observed. “But also, that physicality can play against you because sometimes there are more attractions on the ball… let’s see.”

Despite the intimidating profile of the visitors, Cardoso remains confident that the continental pedigree within the Chloorkop dressing room will be the deciding factor. Sundowns have become staples of the tournament’s knockout rounds, and the coach believes tactical discipline will neutralise the Malians’ strength.

“Sundowns players have experience as well. If they take it to the limit and understand how to approach the game tactically and strategically, it can work,” Cardoso added.

Momentum at Loftus

The Brazilians enter the tie looking to leverage their home advantage before the arduous return leg in Bamako. With the Tshwane giants currently juggling a punishing domestic schedule, the ability to “work the game” strategically—as Cardoso puts it—will be essential to ensuring they carry a healthy lead across the continent next week.

Kick-off at Loftus Versfeld is scheduled for 20:00.
