Carling Knockout: Marumo Gallants thrash Stellies

Marumo Gallants joined Orlando Pirates, Golden Arrows and Richards Bay in the semifinals of the Carling Knockout Cup following Wednesday’s 4-0 destruction of Stellenbosch FC.

Gallants, a pesky and unpredictable side this season, tend to show their best in cup competitions and that was the case on Wednesday. After a strong start from visitors Stellies, who failed to capitalize on early opportunities, the hosts struck through Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo in the 28th minute to snatch the lead.

The major difference was the goalkeeping, which also worked in favor of the team that vanquished Mamelodi Sundowns in the previous round. Washington Arubi continued to be reliable while on the other end, Stellenbosch backup Oscarine Masuluke was all over the place with regular starter Sage Stephens out due to injury.

Ndlondlo used his pace to burn Stellies once again early in the second half and when his cross attempt was blocked by a defender, the diminutive attacker followed up to curl his effort past Masuluke.

In the final twenty minutes, a frustrated Stellenbosch side completely unraveled. A wild ricochet worked in favor of the hosts in the 78th minute to leave Masuluke helpless as Monde Mpambaniso was credited with the goal. Super sub Jaisen Clifford added one more in stoppage time.

The semifinal draw is complete with the dates yet to be confirmed. Orlando Pirates will face Richards Bay while Gallants clash with Golden Arrows.
