Carlisle United have confirmed the signing of experienced Ugandan defender Bevis Mugabi on a two-year contract, as the club looks to rebuild following relegation from the English Football League.

The 30-year-old arrives at Brunton Park after a brief stint with Cypriot side Anorthosis, having previously spent four years in the Scottish Premiership with Motherwell. Mugabi made 125 appearances during his time at Fir Park before departing in the summer of 2023.

A product of Fulham and Southampton’s youth academies, Mugabi first rose to prominence during his time at Yeovil Town, where he played in the English Football League before earning a move north of the border. On the international stage, he has been capped 20 times by the Uganda Cranes.

Carlisle’s head of recruitment, Martin Foyle, praised the defender’s profile, stating:

“He brings a wealth of experience from Scotland, abroad and international football, and he has a fantastic attitude which will help to drive the standards even higher on and off the pitch.”

Mugabi becomes the Cumbrians’ sixth signing of the summer as manager Mark Hughes reshapes his squad for life in the National League. Carlisle open their 2025/26 campaign away to Woking on August 9.
