Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson has offered guidance to Kobamelo Kodisang, urging the struggling winger to prioritise playing time, even if it means a return to Europe.

Kodisang has found it difficult to establish himself since joining Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of the 2024/25 PSL season on a long-term deal from Portuguese side Moreirense FC.

In his debut season with the Brazilians, the 25-year-old former South African junior international has endured a challenging start, struggling to break into the formidable starting line-up of the Tshwane giants.

He featured in just 13 matches across all competitions, contributing two goals and two assists last season.

Kodisang faces stiff competition within Sundowns' star-studded squad, contending with established talents such as Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Themba Zwane, Thapelo Maseko, Tashreeq Matthews, and Neo Maema.

Recognising the player's limited game time, Johnson, who gave Kodisang his PSL debut back in 2015 at the now-defunct Platinum Stars, emphasised the importance of playing regularly.

"I think Kodisang is old enough now and he should be able to make his own decisions. He probably saw what he could do or gain at Sundowns,” Johnson stated. “He’s young as far as football is concerned, so the one thing he has to do is to compete with his counterpart, Gift Links, and you can see that Links is a king in Denmark."

Johnson's message to Kodisang is clear: "Kodisang must remember that when he was in Portugal, he was doing very well. The only thing I can say is that you have to return to the pitch, my boy. You have to make sure to return to the pitch even if it’s on loan or going back overseas, but you just have to make sure that you’re back on the field.”
