Only one team will advance out of Group C at the CECAFA Kagame Cup after another round of matches ended with draws on Sunday. Group favorites Al Hilal Omdurman met fellow Sudanese side Al Ahly Wad Madani with the clash ending in a 1-1 draw.
Nigerian forward Sunday Adetunji scored his first goal for Hilal since joining the club from Kosovo’s FC Ballkani. The former Rivers United player reacted quickly to volley in after the Al Ahly Wad Madani goalkeeper and his defense failed to clear following a scramble for the ball at the edge of the penalty area.
But Al Ahly, who finished third place in the recently completed Sudanese Premier League and will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup this season, responded in the second half. Playmaker Abdelkader Ouabdi produced a moment of brilliance with his long range effort to level and the teams were left to share the points.
In Sunday’s later match, Somalia’s Mogadishu City and Kator FC of South Sudan played to a scoreless draw. All teams remained tied on the Group C table with two points each. Al Hilal have scored the most goals, giving them the slightest of advantages, but there remains plenty to decide on the final day of matches on Wednesday. Mogadishu City will face Al Ahly Wad Madani while Al Hilal take on Kator FC.
Group A will be decided on Monday while Group B wraps up on Tuesday. Ethiopian Coffee, Singida Black Stars of Tanzania and Kenya Police FC are all in contention to advance out of Group A with Monday’s early game between Police and Coffee set to be decisive.
