The Tanzania women’s national team (Twiga Stars) were crowned winners of the CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship 2025 on Friday evening. The hosts kept their 100% winning run after defeating Kenya 1-0 in their last match played at the Azam Complex on Saturday.
Saudi Arabia-based forward Clara Luvanga netted the lone goal after the ball deflected off Kenya’s goalkeeper Lilian Onyango Awuor. In the first half, Opa Clement Tukumbuke had two scoring opportunities flash past the Kenyan goal, while Violet Nanjala Wanyonyi came close for Harambee Starlets.
After the half-time interval, Tanzania started the second half on a high and pushed forward before defender Ruth Mukalukho Ingosi and goalkeeper Awuor failed to communicate well, and the ball took a deflection before hitting the back of the net.
Twiga Stars, cheered on by the huge home crowd that had turned out to watch the final, continued to push forward creating many scoring opportunities that they failed to take.
In an earlier match, South Sudan shocked Burundi 3-1. Mary Bol, Sumaya MaliliTaban and Nyama Nyamam Makuac Deng scored for South Sudan, while Rukiya Bizimana netted the lone goal for Burundi.
While Tanzania emerged winners and received a trophy and medals in the competition played on a round robin basis, Kenya received silver medals, while Uganda picked bronze medals for finishing third.
