Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang extended his scoring streak to three matches on Tuesday, scoring both goals in Olympique Marseille’s 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League.
The prolific 36-year-old forward continues to age like a fine wine. Two goals in quick succession shortly after halftime completed an outstanding comeback for hosts Marseille, who fell behind to an early goal by Harvey Barnes.
Both goals were trademark lethal finishes from the veteran forward. A moment of madness from Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope in the 46th minute saw him come far off his line to challenge for a ball. Aubameyang maneuvered around the stranded keeper but still had plenty of work to do, producing a beautiful curling strike that appeared to be going wide before sneaking inside the near post.
And less than five minutes later, the Gabon national team superstar was at it again with another poacher’s finish. Timothy Weah did well to burst into space on the right wing and his cross found Aubameyang at the near post for an excellent first-time finish.
The former Dortmund and Arsenal star arrived as more of an experienced rotation option upon his return to OM following a season in Saudi football. However, he is becoming more of an important figure and has an impressive record of 8 goals and 7 assists in 16 matches this season for the club from the south of France.
Next up on the schedule is a home match in Ligue 1 against Toulouse on Saturday. OM are in second place on the Ligue 1 table, two points back of reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain. In the Champions League, they moved up to 19th place on the 36-team table with 6 points from 5 matches.
